I first have to say that I feel a bit silly writing this post because I am nooo expert on motherhood, or newborns ha. My experience is obviously just limited to going through it once before, but because of that, there are a couple of things I learned along the way.
With recently moving and unpacking, I've been organizing Piper's nursery and going through things we have for this new baby, and thinking of what we still need. With it all on my mind (nesting is in full force up in here!), I thought I'd share some of my FIVE newborn must-haves (minus the obvious clothes, diapers, wipes, etc.)!
#1 THE OLLIE WORLD SWADDLE
I SWEAR by Ollie World swaddles!!!! They are the velcro swaddles that bundle up your newborn nice and tight. Piper's little hands would always creep up to her face while she slept, waking her up, but these swaddles keep them SO snug and cozy! Jordan calls them baby jail haha because they can't move their hands at all, and they look like sweet little burritos. It has a ring at the bottom to hold the material, so you can easily slide it off to change their diaper without having to unwrap them! SOOO helpful for the middle of the night when you don't want to stimulate them! There are few things worse then having to wake up your sleeping newborn by unwrapping them. My sisters talked me into using these with Piper when she was 3 weeks old and from the first night on she slept 7 hours straight! I'm not going to be one of those mums who preaches to other mums struggling with getting their baby to sleep, because Piper was just naturally a good sleeper (so lucky!!), but these FOR SURE helped! Honestly. GET ONE!
#2 FAWN DESIGN
Fawn Design is the diaper bag I have (I have THIS one) and could not recommend it more!! It's super cute and doesn't look so diaper baggy (you know what I mean?), so I use it even when I don't need baby things. It has tons of big pockets and room inside, which is nice for all the diapers, wipers, bottles, swaddles, toys, change of clothes, etc. that you need! You can easily clean the inside and outside of it with just wipes, and it has 2 kinds of straps, so it can be worn as a backpack or shoulder bag. I HIGHLY recommend a diaper bag that's a backpack, or that has a backpack option, because you're usually holding the baby, or the carseat, and it's so nice not having to worry about the bag, or having it sliding off your shoulder when you lean down. I love everything about it!
Okay, who hasn't heard of Dockatot at this point?? I actually never had one of these with Piper, so I don't have personal experience with it yet, but the way that people raaaaave about them made me want one! They're designed to be used for co-sleeping, playmats, and loungers, so basically you can move them anywhere and they will be perfectly comfortable no matter where they are! I think it'll be so helpful to have with Piper too, because I can always move him out of reach from her, while still being able to sleep. The barriers around the sides keep the baby nice and enclosed which I think is why Ollie World swaddles work so well too, because babies are used to that from the womb, and it's soothing for them.
#4 SOLLY WRAP
I had suuuuuch a hard time putting Piper down when she was a newborn. I wanted to soak up every second with her (and I felt like I did), but there were also times I needed 2 hands to get stuff done. I don't know if it was just my crazy hormones, but I felt super guilty laying her down because I felt like I was abandoning her (#mumguilt on steroids), and I also missed her! Solly Wrap saved me! I used it when Jordan and I went out to dinner, at the grocery store (because the car seat takes up the WHOLE freaking cart if they don't have specific cart for car seats - soo annoying), when I went on walks, when I made dinner, did housework, etc. The wraps keeps your baby up against your chest, and bundled up so tight. I didn't realize how much I like my babies being enclosed and snug until now haha, but I think it's really important for the baby to feel secure and settled. Piper was always much calmer in the wrap and would often fall asleep right away on me.
#5 PROMPTLY JOURNALS
A friend told me about Promptly Journals when Piper was about 6 months old. I immediately told Jordan to add them to my Christmas list, and he bought me a few (haha he knew how baby hungry I was). These are journals that prompt you (duh) with specific questions/thoughts you don't want to forget from pregnancy to 18 years. There are places to add pictures at each stage, their measurements, funny moments, special and cute memories, etc. I felt overwhelmed with how to document Piper's life, and my future babies lives, because there is just SO MUCH!!! Promptly Journals takes the stress away from figuring out how to document it. It's all in one place and it ensures you don't leave anything out! I am so grateful I found them!
Clearly there are the basic things that newborns need, but these are the additional ones that immediately come to mind. I realize that some of these might be a bit pricier (I get it, I had Piper when we were still in college and living off one income), but I honestly, honestly believe each one is worth the investment! I hope this is helpful, especially if this is your first pregnancy and you're trying to determine what is/isn't necessary!
